Matthew's most notable attribute is his height. He comes from a family of very tall people, and he himself stands just shy of 6'5''. He is also broad shouldered and muscular, from years spent playing almost every sport imaginable. He has shaggy brown hair and hazel eyes. He carries himself proudly, there is no slouching in the Hatfield family. His clothes reflect his privileged up bringing, and even though he is most at home in jeans and flip flops, the jeans cost $600 per pair, and the flip flops are designer made especially for him. You'd expect a guy of his size to look awkward in a suit, but instead he seems born to wear them.
Matthew is a professional student. He has two undergraduate degrees (Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology, and Physics with Honors) and a masters degree in Physics (with Honors). He is currently a 2nd year PhD candidate for neuroscience. Currently he is pursuing his studies, and will be a TA for a couple of undergraduate NBB courses during the 2010/2011 school year. For the summer of 2010 he will be
doing his graduate residence at Mercy East.
He doesn't have time for many activities these days. He's still an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon (nickname: Hermes) and plays intramural sports when he can. In his undergraduate days he was President of Sigma Phi, captain of the soccer team and in the Honors program. He's still very well known around campus, and rather a legend among the younger frat brothers.
Off campus apartment, within walking distance of both the University campus and the medical school. Is often seen at the frat house, around campus and in town.
Matthew is very goal oriented. He's known what he wanted since he was ten years old, and everything he's done in life has been towards that goal. He is, for the most part, a warm and caring human being. He loves being with friends, but is more of an observer than a leader. He finds human behavior fascinating, and is fascinated in turn with the untapped potential of the human mind. He is very much an academic at heart, though enjoys sports and partying from time to time. In the end though, everything about him is geared towards achieving his PhD and continuing on in researching "Fringe" science--also called Noetic science in certain circles. In a crowd he is much more apt to sit apart and watch in fascination the interactions that go on. He sometimes gets carried away in thinking of human behavior in terms of experiments, and needs to be smacked back to reality.
- Strengths: Driven, genius level brilliant, over achiever, and for the most part he is friendly and compassionate
- Weaknesses: Over achiever, perfectionist, arrogant at times,
- Weird Quirks: He is completely obsessed with "Fringe" science, a little bit of a conspiracy theorist. He also has obsessive compulsive tendencies.
Matthew comes from a long line of over achievers. His family has lived in Perthshire for generations. His father, Owen, is Head of Neurosurgery at Mercy West, and his mother Laura serves on the board for several influential institutions, including the hospital and the University. He has an older sister, Madison, who is the an assistant DA and on the road to becoming a Supreme Court Justice one day. She is married to an equally influential defense attorney, and they have two small children. The family is incredibly wealthy, but not overly showy. They prefer to showcase their influence through academic and professional success.
As a child Matthew witnessed a seemingly ordinary woman literally lift a car off her child who was trapped beneath it. Afterwards, he asked his father if she was a superhero and was given a lecture on the extraordinary feats human beings are capable of with the right motivation. Ever since then, Matthew's dream has been to discover the hidden potential in the human brain, and his studies reflect that.
There was never any question that Matthew would attend Ainsworth, as Hatfields had been attending University there almost since the school's inception. There was also no question of which Fraternity to join, though Matthew could never be described as a "party" type. During his Undergraduate years Matthew balanced an intense course load with extracurricular activities, and became a "Big Man on Campus". He dated around, but in the Spring semester of his freshman year through graduation he had a steady girlfriend, though there were times they took "breaks". There were other women after this of course, but not very many and he was known to be completely involved with his studies.
He did a Study Abroad in Scotland during the fall semester of his Junior year and it was there that he finally admitted to himself that he just wasn't interested in girls (he and his girlfriend were on one of their "breaks"). Of course, a Hatfield could never be a fag, so he is still deeply in the closet if not denial, and he got back together with his girlfriend when he returned. Since they've broken up, he keeps his affairs quiet, and only indulges while on holiday far away from home. His former girlfriend, also his best friend, is the only other person who knows of this. Luckily, he has his studies to occupy him.
